Speciation Genetics: Epistasis, Conflict and the Origin of Species
نویسنده
چکیده
Evolutionary biologists have long recognized that the sterility and inviability of species hybrids must involve incompatible epistatic interactions between two (or more) genes. The first pair of such hybrid incompatibility genes has now been identified.

Speciation by reinforcement: a model derived from studies of Drosophila.
Reinforcement is an increase in premating reproductive isolation between taxa resulting from selection against hybrids. We present a model of reinforcement with a novel type of selection on female mating behavior. Previous models of reinforcement have focused on the divergence of female mating preferences between nascent species. We suggest that an increase in the level of female mating discrim...
متن کاملMimicry: developmental genes that contribute to speciation.
Despite renewed interest in the role of natural selection as a catalyst for the origin of species, the developmental and genetic basis of speciation remains poorly understood. Here we describe the genetics of Müllerian mimicry in Heliconius cydno and H. melpomene (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), sister species that recently diverged to mimic other Heliconius. This mimetic shift was a key step in the...

متن کاملThe genetics of speciation: Insights from Fisher's geometric model.
Research in speciation genetics has uncovered many robust patterns in intrinsic reproductive isolation, and fitness landscape models have been useful in interpreting these patterns. Here, we examine fitness landscapes based on Fisher's geometric model. Such landscapes are analogous to models of optimizing selection acting on quantitative traits, and have been widely used to study adaptation and...
متن کاملThe Genetics of Speciation by Reinforcement
Reinforcement occurs when natural selection strengthens behavioral discrimination to prevent costly interspecies matings, such as when matings produce sterile hybrids. This evolutionary process can complete speciation, thereby providing a direct link between Darwin's theory of natural selection and the origin of new species. Here, by examining a case of speciation by reinforcement in Drosophila...
